JOY 94.9 is an independent voice for the diverse lesbian gay bi-sexual transgender & intersex communities listened to by 379,604 people in Melbourne and more online (audience figures from a Survey conducted by McNair Ingenuity Research 2016).
The station provides over 450 free Community Service Announcements on behalf of organisations that serve and support our community. The station is fuelled by the dedication of almost 300 volunteers and only a handful of paid core staff. JOY 94.9 is proudly self-funded through sponsorship and most importantly membership and donations.
Melbourne's sexuality and gender diverse (queer) bookshop is set off Brunswick Street in the heart of Spanishtown at 63 Johnston Street, Fitzroy. With a huge range of fiction and non-fiction titles, coffee table books, erotica, DVDs, cards and the latest magazines from around the world, as well as tickets to all the main queer events, Hares & Hyenas is the one-stop shop for all your queer reading and entertainment needs.
Founded in 1991, Hares & Hyenas opened in Commercial Road, South Yarra, before having other outlets in Fitzroy and Collingwood. In 1999 Hares & Hyenas consolidated its business base back in Commercial Road, before moving to its current larger premises in 2006. Since its opening, Hares & Hyenas has presented over 1000 literary and performance events. Establishing a cafe here in 2007, since 2012 Hares & Hyenas has been operating as a fully licensed performance venue. It currently hosts an average of three shows per week ranging from large seasons at the annual Midsumma, Comedy and Melbourne Fringe festivals to regular spoken word nights and events of all types presented by leading producers and artists.
Switchboard Victoria is a community-based not for profit organisation that provides a peer based, volunteer run support service for LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) people and their friends, families and allies.
Offering phone and web counselling, Switchboard is the Victorian partner in the national telephone and web counselling, information and referral service QLife. This free service is for LGBTI identifying people and those who have questions or concerns about LGBTI issues. This includes families, friends, teachers and co workers of LGBTQI people.
