Globe Member Since 2012
Occupation: Franchise Principle, RAMS Home Loans
Industry: Financial Services/Mortgage Broking
Hometown: Sydney, NSW
Education: Sydney University
Other Qualifications: Advanced Diploma in Banking, Mortgage Broking and Financial Planning
At the age of 21, Evan began his career as a late night mortgage sales person, driving around in a borrowed car and dressed in a ‘hand me down’ suit. He also carried with him a new Mont Blanc pen that his father gave him when he graduated from high school. This wasn’t his ideal job and his original plan was to only work in financial services until he started his career working in media/communications. Now Evan owns one of the most successful RAMS Home Loans franchises in Australia with seven full-time employees.
Tell us how you first got involved with GLOBE
I’ve been going to GLOBE events for about eight years and I first attended the Fruits in Suits networking event, to which an old friend invited me. We had a great time and stayed out way too late. The next day at work was a little rough for the both of us.
What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career so far?
Seeing the growth from starting two mortgage broking businesses from scratch to now having seven full-time staff members on board. We’ve also won multiple awards from Westpac for sales and customer service excellence as well as “New Franchise of the Year” in 2011. It makes me very proud knowing that we can make a positive difference in our clients’ financial lives.
What are some of the biggest obstacles you’ve had to tackle to achieve your success?
The Global Financial Crisis (2007-2008) was a big challenge for me. The reduced risk appetite from lending institutions slowed growth, though I was still able to grow and hire new staff. I believe this success stemmed from my personal drive and passion to succeed. As they say, attitude is everything.
What advice would you give yourself in reflecting back to when you first started your career path?
Hiring the right people is so important. Take the time to find the right staff as they are out there. A majority of the time it’s better not to hire staff unless you are sure that you have found the right candidate. Also, don’t be afraid to pay well to get great people because you will need them.
What has surprised you the most about being a member of GLOBE?
That I’ve made just as many social connections as I have professional.
What makes you smile?
Just how social some of my GLOBE connections have become.
Is there any additional information or important projects you’re working on that you’d like to share with GLOBE members?
I’m currently in the process of acquiring a potential development site that I hope to buy before the end of the year. I want to build four beautiful 6-star rated townhouses that have a mid-century design flair to them.
